Alright, so let’s talk business. What you should know about my work.
I moved to Austin from Washington, DC at the height of the crack epidemic. my son was beginning to get involved with gangs, and my daughter was pre-teen, girls going wild. This was my motivation to make a change. So, with encouragement from a friend already living in Austin, my intent on starting a new career in IT, guided by my faith, and with no job, no family, no encouragement for my minimalist reboot plan, I was able to get a job with a prominent IT startup, be promoted to Systems Admin within a year of starting, earned my Bachelors in Information Technology, obtained my CISA.
Since then, I have served on several committees and volunteered to mentor youth in the community. One bonus from this is that my son, turned away from gang activity, pursued a career in Telecom, and has also been working in IT ever since. I have worked in various IT Project Management positions with the State of Texas for 15 years retiring in June of this year.
After retiring, I will pursue my first loves of writing while working as a financial professional and educator. I also will pursue real estate investing. I also have a passion for showing women how to plan and budget and get their finances to where they can break the cycle of poverty and leave a legacy for their families.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Being willing to break some rules, take risks and be vulnerable. One of the things women do that doesn’t serve them, is being nice and putting their own goals aside to support others in achieving their own. You have to be your own advocate. But always do your best to give back to those who can use encouragement. What has worked for me is to go outside of my comfort zone and stretching myself beyond what I feel I am comfortable doing. Also surround yourself with others who are smarter and more accomplished than you. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you had better be mentoring someone. If not, you’re not going to learn anything that will get you beyond where you are. And not everything is about money. Know your why, why you do something is so much more important than how much you make doing it.
